About The Modern Dane

At The Modern Dane, we don’t just make bedding—we carry forward a tradition.
Inspired by centuries of Scandinavian craftsmanship and a deep respect for nature, our bedding is made from organic flax grown exclusively in France and Belgium and hand-sewn in Portugal. Every piece reflects the simplicity and quiet beauty that define Nordic living.
From nature-printed duvets to heirloom-quality sheets, we create products that honor our heritage—and invite calm into your home.

Our Story

Jacob Andsager, founder of The Modern Dane, grew up in the small coastal town of Broager, Denmark. After moving to the U.S. in 2002, he spent a decade in Chicago—a city he still holds dear—but it wasn’t until arriving in the Pacific Northwest in 2022 that he felt truly at home. Yet even as he settled in, Jacob felt a growing desire to reconnect with his Scandinavian roots—particularly the belief that great design can enhance daily life, and the deep respect for the materials we bring into our homes.

That desire sparked an idea: to use the duvet cover as a canvas for nature-inspired design, bringing a sense of Nordic calm and craftsmanship into the everyday.

“I had this idea of bedding as a canvas,” he says. “We spend a third of our lives in bed. Why not make that space beautiful, meaningful, and connected to nature?” Jacob envisioned organic patterns that reflected his Danish heritage and love for the natural world.

But as he dug deeper into the world of textiles, he was struck by the environmental toll of the cotton industry. Dubbed “the world’s dirtiest crop,” conventional cotton depends on pesticide-heavy farming, irrigation, and often exploitative labor practices. He knew he wanted to build something different—something better.

Through extensive research and conversations with environmental organizations, Jacob discovered certified organic European flax linen. “Flax requires no irrigation and no pesticides. It’s a carbon sink, and its processing is purely mechanical—no chemicals, no shortcuts,” he says. “It’s where quality meets sustainability. And it just happens to be the most beautiful textile I’ve ever worked with.”

In 2018, Jacob traveled to the textile hub of Guimarães, Portugal—often called the cradle of European textile craft—to find a manufacturing partner who shared his values. At a trade show held in a centuries-old monastery overlooking the medieval town below, he connected with a factory known for its expertise in European flax linen and its commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. The final piece had fallen into place.

To meet the highest environmental standards, Jacob committed to using only certified materials: GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OEKO-TEX®, and European Flax®. These certifications ensure that every step of the production process—from raw fiber to finished product—is held to strict ecological and human safety standards. “It means our bedding is 100% organic, chemical-free, and safe for your home,” he says.

When it came to design, Jacob embraced the duvet cover’s expansive format as an opportunity to highlight the natural texture of linen. “The patterns are my personal tribute to Scandinavian landscapes—but always with the textile front and center,” he explains. The result is a collection that blends elegance, simplicity, and timelessness.

As a direct-to-consumer brand, The Modern Dane cuts out the traditional retail markup—making premium products more accessible while allowing for thoughtful details like eco-friendly packaging and personalized customer service.

Bringing the brand to life has been a deeply fulfilling experience for Jacob. He especially treasures stories from customers who’ve redesigned their bedrooms around his bedding. “I go to bed thinking about the thousands of people sleeping under our linens,” he says. “Knowing that we’re bringing comfort, beauty, and sustainability into their homes—that’s the greatest reward.”

A Word from Our Founder

"Growing up in Denmark, I developed a deep appreciation for design—not just how things look, but how they shape the way we live. After seventeen years in the U.S., I felt a strong pull to reconnect with those roots and share that passion with my American family and friends.

I started The Modern Dane to create products that bring lasting joy to people’s homes—pieces made to endure, to be cherished, and even passed down. At its heart, this brand is about my belief in durability, sustainability, and the idea that good design should enrich our lives.

My hope is that your Modern Dane product outlasts the next ten you would’ve bought—and that when its time finally comes, it can be gracefully returned to the earth. I truly believe we’ve reached a turning point: the era of disposable goods is behind us. It’s time to return to craftsmanship, to honoring our materials, and to creating things worth keeping.

This is the journey we’re on. I hope you’ll join us in building a future where we all live a little more beautifully."
